Hi, I’m Perrine. A scuba instructor with over 15 years experience.

One of the most important skills we need as a diver is: the ability to remain calm underwater without our dive mask. It’s completely normal to feel anxious in this situation, but today, I’m going to share a tip to help you build confidence.

When you first experience water around your nose, it can trigger a mild panic response. But we’re going to work through that together.

Start in shallow water, or wherever you feel safest. Inflate your BC and let your gear float next to you.

Now, using your gear as a platform, put your regulator in and gently submerge your face into the water. If you feel anxious, don’t worry—just come up, reset, and try again. The key is to be patient and non-judgmental with yourself.

Remember, just like any physical activity, it takes time for your body to adapt. Keep practising until you feel more confident and can comfortably breathe without the urge to replace your mask.
